MYP English as an additional language (EAL) - Grade 7

Summary:
Grade 7 EAL is an additional language-learning course designed to support students that need to further develop their language skills. The main focus of the course is on language acquisition is the development of language skills that are required for students to succeed academically in other classes. Topics and language deal with vocabulary that students need in everyday situations and to complete assignments for other subjects. The students will also be working on approaches to learning and practice thinking skills, social skills, self-management and research skills.

Unit 3- World without structure
  • Discussing theories
  • Formal writing
  • Countable and uncountable nouns
Unit 2 – Finding Your Way
  • Understanding what others need
  • Expressing personal preferences
  • Describing everyday activities and past activities
Unit 4 – World without Family
  • Identifying different parts of speech
  • Discussing attitudes
  • Intrapersonal intelligence 
Aims:  
As stated in the MYP Language acquisition guide, the aims of MYP Language acquisition are to encourage and enable students to
  • gain proficiency in an additional language while supporting maintenance of their mother tongue and cultural heritage
  • develop a respect for, and understanding of, diverse linguistic and cultural heritages
  • develop the student’s communication skills necessary for further language learning, and for study, work and leisure in a range of authentic contexts and for a variety of audiences and purposes
  • develop multiliteracy skills through the use of a range of learning tools, such as multimedia, in the various modes of communication
  • develop an appreciation of a variety of literary and non-literary texts and to develop critical and creative techniques for comprehension and construction of meaning.
  • recognize and use language as a vehicle of thought, reflection, self-expression and learning in other subjects, and as a tool for enhancing literacy
  • understand the nature of language and the process of language learning, which comprises the integration of linguistic, cultural and social components
  • offer insight into the cultural characteristics of the communities where the language is spoken
  • encourage an awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from own and other cultures, leading to involvement and action in own and other communities
  • foster curiosity, inquiry and a lifelong interest in, and enjoyment of, language learning.

Feedback on and final levels of achievement for assessments are based on four equally weighted assessment criteria

At the end of phase 2 students should be able to:

Comprehending spoken and visual text
  • show understanding of messages, main ideas and supporting details
  • recognize basic conventions
  • engage with the spoken and visual text by identifying ideas, opinions and attitudes and by making a personal response to the text.
B
Comprehending written and visual text
  • identify basic facts, main ideas and supporting details, and draw conclusions
  •  recognize basic conventions including aspects of format and style, and author’s purpose for writing
  •  engage with the written and visual text by identifying ideas, opinions and attitudes and by making a personal response to the text.
C
Communicating in response to spoken and/or written and/or visual text
  • respond appropriately to spoken and/or written and/or visual text
  • interact in basic structured exchanges
  • use phrases to communicate ideas, feelings and information in familiar situations
  • communicate with a sense of audience.
D
Using language in spoken and/or written form
  •  write and/or speak using a basic range of vocabulary, grammatical structures and conventions; when speaking, use clear pronunciation and intonation
  • organize information and ideas and use a range of basic cohesive devices
  • use language to suit the context.

Student Expectations
 
  • Abide by the school rules (as outlined in the Student Handbook)
  • Respect your classmates’ rights to learn
  • Be considerate of others and the environment in everything you do
  • Keep the classroom clean and tidy
  • Be on time, turn your assignments in on time, and make up work that you have missed
  • Bring your academic supplies daily: folder, notebook, pen/pencil, agenda, etc.
  • Be an active learner – participate in class and in collaborative learning activities
  • Academic honesty is expected of all students
