Grade 8 Design students will be challenged to apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve design problems. Students will develop proficiency in their understanding and use of the Design cycle as methodology of how designers develop products. The process is divided into four stages: inquiring and analyzing; developing ideas; creating the solution; evaluating. This process leads to the creation of solutions that solves a problem. In grade 8 we will be exploring the key concepts of SYSTEMS, COMMUNITY and COMMUNICATION in respect to sustainable design principles, graphic design and forms of communication in marketing.

Units and topics:

Unit 1- Re-design me
  • Graphical communication
  • 2D sketching skills, rendering techniques
  • Isometric drawing and orthographic projection
Unit 2 -Pop-up book project
  • Basic book design elements (layout, typography, illustration)
  • Simple mechanisms
  • Pop up mechanisms
Unit 3- Sustainable Architecture
  • Elements of architectural design
  • Sustainability/green design principles
  • Architectural model making
Aims: As stated in the MYP Design guide, the aims of the teaching and study of design are to empower and inspire students to:
  • enjoy the design process and develop an appreciation of its elegance and power
  • develop knowledge, understanding and skills from different disciplines to design and create solutions to problems using the design cycle
  • use and apply technology effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, model and create solutions and to solve problems
  • develop an appreciation of the impact of design innovations for life, global society and environments
  • appreciate past, present and emerging design within cultural, political, social, historical and environmental contexts
  • develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
  • act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for their own actions developing effective working practices.

Assessment criteria:
Feedback on and final levels of achievement for assessments are based on four equally weighted assessment criteria

Assessment
Criteria

At the end of year 3, students should be ableto:

A

Inquiring and
Analysing
  • explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
  • state and prioritize the primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem independently
  • describes a group of similar products that inspire a solution to the problem iv. develops a design brief, which outlines the findings of relevant research.
  • develops a design brief, which outlines the findings of relevant research.

B

Developingideas
  • develop a designspecification, whichidentify the successcriteria for thedesign of a solution
  • presents a range offeasible design ideas, using an appropriatemedium(s) and explainskey features, which canbe correctly interpretedby others
  • present the chosendesign and outlines themain reasons for itsselection with reference tothe design specification
  • develops accurateplanning drawing/diagramand lists requirements forthe creation of
  • the chosen solution

C

Creatingthesolution
  • constructs a plan, which considers the useof resources and time, sufficient for peers to beable to follow to createthe solution
  • demonstrate excellenttechnical skills whenmaking the solution
  • follows the plan tocreate the solution, whichfunctions as intended
  • outlines changes madeto the chosen design and plan when making the solution

D

Evaluating
  • describe relevanttesting methods, whichgenerate data, tomeasure the success of the solution
  • describes the successof the solution againstthe design specificationbased on relevant product testing
  • outlines how the solutioncould be improved
  • describes the impact ofthe solution on theclient/target audience, with guidance.
Required materials:
  • Please bring the following materials to every class:
  • Charged laptop
  • Pencil case (pencil, pen)
  • Notebook
Students are encouraged to:
  • To embrace challenges
  • To accept mistakes and failure and learn from them
  • To be open to feedback and suggestions
  • To ask for help when needed
  • To put best effort and be persistent
