Summary:
The aim of this and all PHE classes at ISB in the MYP is to improve cognitive functioning through movement. In year 3, students begin with the foundational unit for the entire course: Functional Movement.  In this introductory unit, students will learn how to assess their functional movement and how to improve it.  Using their knowledge and skills, students will apply it to further units throughout the course.  Students are exposed to a wide range of movement patterns, games, and fitness concepts in order to broaden their appreciation of fitness for life.

Aims: As stated in the MYP PHE guide, the aims of MYP PHE are to encourage and enable students to:

  • Achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively
  • Build positive relationships and demonstrate social responsibility

At the end of year three, students should be able to:

Knowing and Understanding
I.Describe physical and health education (factual, procedural and conceptual knowledge).
II.Apply physical and health education knowledge to explain issues and solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar situations.
III. Apply physical and health terminology effectively to communicate understanding.

Planning for Performance
I.Outline goals to enhance performance.
II.Design and explain a plan for improving physical performance and health. 
C
Applying and Performing
I.Demonstrate and apply a range of skills and techniques.
II.Demonstrate and apply a range of strategies of movement concepts.
III.Outline and apply information to perform effectively.
D
Reflecting and Improving Performance
I.Describe and demonstrate strategies to enhance personal skills.
II. Explain the effectiveness of a plan based on the outcome.
III.Explain and evaluate performance. 
Required materials:
  • PE kit (sports shorts, clean trainers, PE shirt (not the regular shirt worn during the school day), socks; if outside a hat is required.
  • Special activities (i.e. swimming) will have specialized PE kit announced prior to the start of the unit of inquiry.
We decided as a class that some ways to be more successful in this course are:
