Summary:
Grade 7 Sciences is an MYP science course that includes some physics, biology and chemistry. We will explore the key concepts of Change, Aesthetics and Systems. Physics topics deal primarily with movement of energy through systems, with a focus on light and sound energy, as well as the impact of gravity and its connection to life on Earth. We will explore this further when looking at processes that influence weather and climate patterns, again looking at human connections. Next, we will explore life outside of Earth and finally the biology of plants will be revealed alongside their incredible ability to adapt to their surrounding environments. This course focuses on applying critical thinking in a global context, as well as data interpretation, research skills and experimentation.

Units and Topics:
Unit 1 – Waves all around us
  • Understand the various ways waves of energy behave.
  • Describe waves in terms of wavelength, frequency and amplitude.
  • Understand the way light and sound travel through various medium, including the vacuum of space.
Unit 2 - Weather & Climate
  • Explain the difference between weather and climate
  • Comparing climates of Earth and Mars
  • Gain an understanding of Global Climate Change
  • Investigate the effect of Global Climate Change on a particular part of the world
Unit 3 – There’s no place like home
  • Comparisons of properties between and among planets in our Solar System
  • Understanding the basic characteristics of gravity
  • Investigate how gravity affects the shape of planets and stars, orbits and the origin of the universe.
  • Application of Newton’s Laws of Gravity to describe motion of objects
  • Explore the influence of technology on our knowledge and understanding of the Universe
Unit 4- Amazing World of Plants
  • Explore the physiology and biology of plants (and animals) and our connection to them
  • Investigate sustainability and food production
  • Identify methods used for classifying plants
  • Understand how plants grow and reproduce
Required materials for every class:

Chargedlaptop.  ● Notebook with a hard cover. The pages can be blank (unlined) or lined pages. This notebook must be used just for science class. ● Writing implements - pen, pencil, ruler

Covered shoes (mandatory when conducting experiments) ● Calculator ● Earbud or headphones.  ● Graph paper ● A set of colored pencils and highlighters

Aims: As stated in the MYP Sciences guide, the aims of MYP science are to encourage and enable students to

  • Develop inquiring minds and curiosity about science and the natural world
  • Acquire knowledge, conceptual understanding and skills to solve problems and make informed decisions in scientific and other contexts
  • Develop skills of scientific inquiry to design and carry out scientific investigations and evaluate scientific evidence to draw conclusions
  • Communicate scientific ideas, arguments and practical experiences accurately in a variety of ways
  • Think analytically, critically and creatively to solve problems, judge arguments and make decisions in scientific and other contexts
  • Appreciate the benefits and limitations of science and its application in technological developments
  • Understand the international nature of science and the interdependence of science, technology and society, including the benefits, limitations and implications imposed by social, economic, political, environmental, cultural and ethical factors
  • Demonstrate attitudes and develop values of honesty for themselves, others, and their shared environment
