Summary:
Welcome to the MYP Spanish Language Acquisition course. As a key factor in the development of international understanding language has an important role at ISB.
 
Language acquisition can be not only a highly challenging and rewarding process, but also an enjoyable one. In an attempt to foster a positive attitude towards language learning, through the course students will be encouraged to develop an appreciation for not only the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures, but also for the process of language acquisition.
 
Teaching and learning in the chosen language acquisition course is organized into six phases. These phases represent a developmental continuum of additional language learning. Depending on their prior additional language learning experiences, students may start their language acquisition course in any phase of the continuum and may exit from any phase on the continuum.
 
Regardless of the phase, students will develop their language skills through various units and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding by applying and using various language processes in combination with each other, and in a range of authentic situation.

Unit 1- Who am I?
Sharing personal and family information
The present tense
Subject-verb agreement
Agreement in gender and number (articles, nouns and adjectives)

Aims:  As stated in the MYP Language Acquisition guide, the aims of the teaching and learning of MYP language acquisition are for students to: 
  •  gain proficiency in an additional language while supporting maintenance of their mother tongue and cultural heritage 

  • develop a respect for, and understanding of, diverse linguistic and cultural heritages 

  • develop the student’s communication skills necessary for further language learning, and for study, work and leisure in a range of authentic contexts and for a variety of audiences and purposes
  • develop multiliteracy skills through the use of a range of learning tools, such as multimedia, in the various modes of communication 

  • develop an appreciation of a variety of literary and non-literary texts and to develop critical and creative techniques for comprehension and construction of meaning 
  • recognize and use language as a vehicle of thought, reflection, self-expression and learning in other subjects, and as a tool for enhancing literacy 

  • understand the nature of language and the process of language learning, which comprises the integration of linguistic, cultural and social components 

  • gain insight into the cultural characteristics of the communities where the language is spoken
  • gain an awareness and understanding of the perspectives of people from own and other cultures, leading to involvement and action in own and other communities 

  • develop curiosity, inquiry and a lifelong interest in, and enjoyment of, language learning
Assessment criteria:
Feedback on and final levels of achievement for assessments are based on four equally weighted assessment criteria

As appropriate to the phase, the student is expected to be able to:

Comprehending spoken and visual text
listen for specific purposes and respond to show understanding
 interpret visual text that is presented with spoken text
 engage with the text by supporting opinion and personal response with evidence and examples from the text.

Comprehending written and visual text
 read for specific purposes and respond to show understanding
 interpret visual text that is presented with written text
engage with the text by supporting opinion and personal response with evidence and examples from the text.
C
Communicating in response to spoken, written and visual text
 interact and communicate in various situations
express thoughts, feelings, ideas, opinions and information in spoken and written form
speak and write for specific purposes.

Using language in spoken and written form
organize thoughts, feelings, ideas, opinions and information in spoken and written form
develop accuracy when speaking and writing in the target language.
Required materials:
Please bring the following materials to every class:
  • A4 notebook
  • Laptop
I expect my students to come to class prepared, to have an open-minded attitude towards all classroom activities, to complete all assignments on time and thoroughly, to demonstrate respectful behavior in class, and treat each other with care and empathy. They are expected to be good communicators and share their knowledge and opinions in a considerate and respectful way, as well as listen to the opinions of others with just as much consideration and respect.
