Following an extensive global search we are delighted that Erik Lutley will be joining our team as Secondary School Principal from summer 2023. 

Erik considers himself a citizen of the world. Born and raised in Iceland by American parents and having spent the last 25 years living in Poland, he holds citizenship from each of those countries. A third culture kid himself, Erik is passionate about international education and started his career in a small British international school in Poland teaching English Language and Literature. Seventeen years ago, he joined his current school, the International School of Krakow, where he has been serving as the Secondary School Principal and where he and his wife work, and from where their two sons both graduated. As a sister CEESA school, Erik is particularly excited about ISB’s Mission, Vision, and Values which align closely with his own and his current school’s. An active life-long learner himself, Erik is also keen to add Serbian to his list of languages!  

Erik has learned a lot over the years about leading change, developing processes that facilitate learning, and above all else, helping build a sense of community. As a school leader, he has been intimately involved in his school's accreditation cycles (including CIS, NEASC, and IB); the teacher supervision and evaluation program; recruiting and retaining highly qualified teachers; and establishing a formalized student feedback process that helps guide teacher learning and goal setting. 

Erik describes himself as a good listener who assumes positive intent in others and who is focused on finding solutions rather than dwelling on them. As an educational and staff leader,  he enjoys recruiting highly-qualified, experienced teachers on the one hand, while also nurturing latent talent in young "home-grown" educators on the other. In all his interactions with community stakeholders, he has learned that a blend of a sense of humor, wisdom, and an openness to listen is the best way to build a common purpose and unified vision. Erik is excited to be joining the International School of Belgrade next year and learning more about its diverse and dynamic community!
