MS. LJUDMILA JANICIJEVIC

Dear Parents,

Grade one students opened their school year with a truly exiting transdisciplinary theme Who We Are
and its central idea that we connect with each other through what is important to us. Some of this
theme’s main objectives were to demonstrate and celebrate group commonalities through different
media, to express similarities and differences regarding students’ preference for various music styles
and dances (classical, modern, folk), as well as to bring awareness of what is important to every indi-
vidual, but also to explore the same about his / her peers.

While aiming to follow a steady beat, first grade students worked on perfecting their singing, with pi-
ano accompaniment. They sang songs from a variety of cultures and genres. With songs such as
“How We Do,” “Music Family,” “Sing for Peace,” and “My Kazoo Fell on the Floor,” students
worked on their dancing skills too. They practiced movements of various body parts in isolation.
In addition, they took on an extra challenge – to sing a song by memory in a language other than Eng-
lish. We sang “Somos el barco." With a goal to enrich their performance with classroom props, they
also accompanied songs with drums and rhythmic sticks.

Next month students will continue to develop their music literacy by working on music symbols.
