  Dear fourth grade parents,

Here is the first newsletter for the French class in order to keep you informed about the things we
have been learning since the beginning of this school year.

After revisiting some of the vocabulary and structures covered in grades 1, 2 and 3, we worked on
the posters for our learner profile attributes and we started connecting with the homeroom
“Heroes” Unit. We have been working on personality description vocabulary, especially the traits
connected to the Learner Profile as well as attitudes, while reflecting on the traits we encounter in
heroes. It was also important for us to discuss the criteria for someone to be seen as a hero and to
create super hero characters of our own through play based activities. We have also read different
documents about people important to French history (biographies). We have been practicing asking
and answering questions, so that we can produce imaginary interviews with these characters.
Throughout all of these activities, the children are practicing understanding instructions given in
French and are permanently encouraged to use that language themselves and practice the structures
  we have been learning.

We are learning through drawings, listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, in order to de-
velop all the competences necessary to quality communication (reading and listening comprehension,
speaking and writing). I would also like to remind you that some of the explicit grammar is being
included at this point, but the emphasis remains on sensitization in order to enable the students to
use correctly some of the basic structures.

Thank you for your time and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
