 Dear Parents,
EAL students are provided with English language support in order to meet their diverse needs in Eng-
lish language and literacy development. Our focus is to develop the concepts and vocabulary needed
for the students to integrate seamlessly into the learning of their homerooms. Much of our work will
be devoted to developing writing skills as this area of language learning usually requires particular at-
tention. We will also work on developing reading and comprehension skills, and listening and speaking.
Some of the activities we engaged during this period involved sequencing story cards and coming up
with a written version of the same story. We talked about important aspects of writing – how to devel-
op a story, and how to write a personal narrative. We are currently working on learning how to incor-
porate description effectively into our texts. In order to comprehend how a story could be elaborated,
we read two versions of the same fairy tales and then discussed the differences. The students com-
mented on the use of descriptive words, dialogue and the amount of detail in each story, using an in-
quiry approach into their research of what makes a good story.
