Dear Grade 5 Parents,

Welcome to our last Spanish Newsletter in this successful school year. As always, we
want to inform you on our Spanish classroom activities and the language learning
phase that we are going through.

Spanish Language Grade 5 students are experiencing an important period in their academic develop-
ment leaving the Lower School soon. The last weeks they were involved in preparing
their final Exhibition, which had an influence on our activities in the Spanish class-
room. The first weeks of May we worked on different subjects connected to their
Exhibition projects. Some students were making comics on climate change, some of
them were creating an invitation for the exhibition. One student inquired and wrote
an essay about population growth in Spain, and there was one project of a mathe-
matician biography in Spanish.

Once we concluded the Exhibition, we started our unit, My Birthday, which we
worked on theme parties and their organization. The students listened to different
versions of birthday songs and acquired the necessary vocabulary to talk about the
party organization (invitations, music, decoration, food and birthday cake, presents).
In groups, they decided what kind of party they wanted (the final choice was a
sports party and a comedy party) and we made the invitations. As for the structures
acquired, we focused on the decoration and kitchen vocabulary, especially the verbs
such as cortar (to cut), pelar (to peel), batir (to whip), calentar (to heat), precalentar
(preheat), echar (to pour), añadir (to add), cocinar (to cook), mezclar (to mix). The
students improved their writing skills by making a cake recipe. At the moment, we
are finishing the party organization and we are passing on the going further phase,
when we are going to make a piñata and a Kit-Kat cake and organize a small class-
room party, as the best way to say goodbye to our lovely Grade 5 students and wish
them luck in their future education.
