Music

Singing by memory and dancing in unison, kindergarteners worked on putting
multiple elements together in order to create a single unified performance. Em-
phasis was placed on the importance maintaining a steady beat. To gain better
understanding as well as appreciation for musical performances, students were
exposed to a variety of musical styles. Lastly, we looked at improvisation as an
element in music and took some risk in order to improvise ourselves. However, a Ljudmila Janicijevic
definite highlight of the month for our kindergarten students was a ballet perfor- Music Teacher
mance of Aladdin that took place on our campus. Complementing our theme of
How Do We Express Ourselves, this performance was a perfect fit for us and a
great way to enrich students’ learning experience.

Movement & Dance

During May, our focus was on balance. Children explored and learned different
techniques of keeping their bodies still and balanced. We balanced with the
beanbags on our heads, knees, and backs. It was quite challenging to keep the
beanbag off the ground. Students practiced hopping using an obstacle set. With
each practice they were getting better and more confident.

As a connection to the PYP unit Personal Journeys, we reflected on our accom- Ivana Jovanovic
plishments in the Movement and Dance class. As dramatizing stories and per- M&D Teacher
forming skits was our year-round focus, we developed steps (a journey) to quick-
ly and effectively perform Three Little Pigs.
