We are currently working on the single subject unit of inquiry ‘Who We Are – Artistic Jour-
ney’ as a connection to the students’ learning in the homeroom. The focus in this unit is on
students’ choices so they can learn more about themselves and each other.
In the previous weeks, students were choosing materials for their works. We introduced two
different art styles: the style of Henry Matisse in his early work and the style of Pablo Pi-
casso’s cubism phase. The goal is to expose students to observational drawing and paint-
ing in order to learn to copy the shapes that they see. In addition they will also start to
learn about proportion - the different sizes of the head and the body, while learning about
the works of Matisse. While learning about Picasso, students will have opportunities to play
with real life shapes in order to create imaginative compositions.
After we learn about these two different perspectives, students will pick one of these two
artists to study in greater detail.
