First graders began this year by developing their awareness and appreciation of mu-
sic from different sources and cultures. This allowed students to share music from
their home countries as well as globally recognized songs in order to find commonal-

ities and preferences that connect us all. From Michael Jackson to Tchaikovsky; stu-

dents recognized their common preferences in terms of sounds, styles, instruments,
and genres. This led to formation of groups based on common preferences and
each group then choreographed a dance. We also explored call and response songs

- creating two groups of singers. In their singing groups, students explored different

rhythmic and melodic patterns and were able to see music as a discipline in which a
group comes together to work as one. Our songs of the month were "Hi,Hey'' and
'“Play Me.”

We are now looking forward to building our choir repertoire with professional pianist,

Mr. Uros Rankovic, and developing our "music literacy" by recording pitches on staff
paper.
