This year’s fifth grade group has many leaders with a significant background in music and a

desire to excel in this subject. With their curiosity and enthusiasm for music, the inquiry into
this form of art comes naturally. Connecting with the PYP unit "Organization" we adopted
grade five's classroom agreements to fit the needs of our music class. We also discussed dif-
ferent forms and structures in music as well as different roles and responsibilities. This will
surely help students to function more effectively as we move from choir, to band, to orchestra,

soloist, and other formations.

Our learning in class was reinforced by a visit to Belgrade's Philharmonic Orchestra that took
place on September 16th.

There, we had a chance to meet a composer, conductor, and members of the orchestra. We
observed their different roles and responsibilities and ways in which they communicate and
how their organize themselves. Of course, we also enjoyed listening to some great music -
live!

We already created several bands and began with music making and performing process.
Students are playing percussion instruments and kazoos, making arrangements for a variety of
songs. In addition, we practiced reading notes as well. Our songs of the month were "Rather
Be" and "Top of the World."

While continuing to read music scores, next month we will pay a special attention to concepts
such are rhythm, pitch, and voice.
