Kindergartners began this year by exploring music as a tool for communicating. Making a connection with the
PYP unit "Signs and Symbols", students explored classroom signs and symbols such as signs for silence and
for applause as well as signs for loud and soft. Focusing on writing, students also learned how to record a note
on staff paper. Communicating through signs and symbols we also used the baton (conductor's stick) and tried
a number of basic orchestra exercises such a "stop and go". When listening to music, students were able to

explore different messages, feelings, and moods conveyed through music. They discussed music and expanded
their music vocabulary. Our songs of the month were " Play Me " and "Hi,Hey."

As we move forward, we will continue writing music symbols. This time focusing on placing notes on lines
and spaces and addings signs for dynamic changes. Students will also be introduced to new percussion instru-
