Welcome to the last Spanish Newsletter for the year 2014. As usual, here you can
find out more about the activities taking place in our Spanish classroom.
During the month of November, Grade 3 students continued to work on their unit on
Maps, in which we focused on house plans and direction expressions. The students
had the opportunity to interpret plans of different houses and we learned how to give
instructions to others in order to help them find a certain room in a house. The stu-
dents learned movement verbs and expressions such as entras, vas todo recto,
giras a la izquierda/derecha, pasas el pasillo/el baƱo, etc. They had the assignment
to make the plan of their house and create the task through which their peers would
have to follow their maps and fill in the gaps with the expressions learned. The stu-
dents were very successful in this activity. Afterwards, we proceeded to learn the
vocabulary of different furniture through games using flash cards, online quizzes as
well as board and association games. We strengthened our grammar knowledge by
learning the difference between the verbs HAY and ESTAR, the language elements
they could/could not be combined with, the word order and the singular and plural of
ESTAR. Furthermore, the students reinforced their knowledge on place prepositions
talking about the position of the furniture in different rooms.
Students are currently completing their final task for this unit making the presentation
of their house, through which they will demonstrate the knowledge of the language
contents studied throughout the unit. Once this task is finished, we will start our next
connecting unit: How We Express Ourselves, in which we will work with short stories
and poems in Spanish. Also, as the holidays are approaching, we are going to listen
to festive songs and write holiday cards.
