Dear Grade 4 parents,

Before the holidays start, it´s a good time to inform you what Grade 4 Spanish students were learning during
the last month.

In November we continued to work on our instructions for daily life unit. The students read instructions for dif-

ferent kitchen appliances and practiced the imperative form/singular of the verbs. Also, the students came up
with their own ideas for appliances that do not exist, but could be useful in our daily life and wrote about them
focusing on their purpose and instructions for their usage. All the inventions were very interesting and creative

and the class enjoyed the presentations.

In continuation, we kept practicing the instructions of different recipes. As a cultural connection, we read recipes
of different meals from Spain and Latin America such as la tortilla española, la paella, el gazpacho, los churros,

los burritos, el ajíaco, las patatas bravas, and other common foods. We also focused on reinforcing the impera-
tive form, connecting words such as primero, después, entonces, luego, al final, as well as on the vocabulary of
kitchen verbs, utensils and aliments. The students learned what importance the tapas have for Spanish people

and culture. We tried to transfer this concept to the class and the students imagined how their own tapas could
look like and wrote the recipes for them. We organized a Tapas Contest and we were all excited to try the

students´ delicious pieces of food. A big thanks to Ms. Ivana Bursac, Grade 4 Instructional Aide, who helped us
during the contest!

Currently, the students are working on their final project-Blog de cocina. In groups, the students created blogs

as a form of their online cookbooks. The year 1 students continued to practice food vocabulary and expressions
used for ordering in a restaurant. As a final task, they will perform a dialogue in a restaurant based on the
menu that they have previously written.

Since the winter holidays are approaching, we are also going to learn how they are celebrated in Hispanic
countries and listen to the festive songs in Spanish.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all happy holidays!
