January was an action-packed month in Music class. Students returned from the winter break
recharged and ready to learn. We recognized Mozart’s birthday through various activities during
the month. Students were especially interested in BBC’s animated version of the “Magic Flute,”
which led us to lots of discussions and learning about opera. Students showed keen interest and
appreciation for Mozart’s work.

Ukulele was the instrument of the month. The main focus was on holding the ukulele properly
and strumming with the thumb; proper fingering techniques were practiced. In addition, singing
skills were mastered, mainly through songs “Alabama Gal,” “Music Family.”
Songs of the month came from Mozart’s opera “Magic Flute” and those were “Air of the Queen

of The Night,” “Papageno” and “Small Night Music.”
Next month we expect to be able to distinguish sounds of various instruments in the “Magic
Flute.” We will also discuss how music (story) makes the students feel.
It seems worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also
brought a beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin.”
This book about the world famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how the beauty of music and

life in general we can easily experience, only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also high-
lights how perceptive children are, much more than the adults.
One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian artist Dusan
Petricic. The book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just like our school does.
