 Dear Parents,
In October in-class EAL support focused on building literacy skills through the year- long Unit of
Inquiry - Personal Journeys, and the central idea: Documenting our personal journeys helps us un-
derstand how we change over time. We focused on introducing the concept of reflecting and docu-
menting our personal journeys. We started by encouraging the students to create their own “big”
goals. They were given a criteria chart, and they had to follow the instructions with teacher’s support
and create their own achievable goals.
We continued building listening and speaking skills through playing various language games and ac-
tivities. We practiced giving instructions on how to play a favorite game. We focused on listening
comprehension, and answering questions (who, what, where, when, why, how) using complete sen-
tences instead of one word answers or phrases. We practiced reading and writing basic sight words.
In-class support also included making pictures with shapes - circles, triangles, squares and rectangles,
drawing the pictures, and counting how many of each shape the students used in their pictures.
The EAL group created a new calendar pattern for November. They wrote the numbers on the
sticky notes using the real calendar as a model.
Great work, Kindergarten A and B!
