MS. SVETLANA SPASIC GLID
Dear Parents,
In the previous weeks, students were working on the single subject unit of inquiry ‘How the World
Works.’ The goal for this unit is that students begin to understand how to represent real space,
which they will continue learning more in the following grades.
We conducted series of experiments, which helped students to start thinking and understanding real
space. We observed the space of the school yard, where the space ends and where the sky meets the
ground. That lead to learning about horizon line and how different shapes around us are placed. Stu-
dents took photographs of each other standing in the school yard and discussed how they occupied
the space with their bodies.
All those experiments lead us to observational drawing. Students were drawing outside whenever the
weather permitted. They studied the importance of representing the shapes and placing them in
space as they saw them while drawing and creating collages. Students also made paper boats, which
they placed in plastic bins filled with water and observed the space in front and behind the boats.
They created lovely sketches as a result of their observations.
