Dear Parents,
In December and January, we supported the transdisciplinary theme Who We Are – Balanced choic-
es unit, and its central idea: Routines and habits affect our health and our body functions. EAL stu-
dents inquired into specific vocabulary related to identifying food groups, naming fruits and vegeta-
bles, explaining the difference between healthy and unhealthy choices, etc. EAL students talked
about their habits and daily choices using present simple tense. We also had various reading and
writing activities: we continued identifying the main idea in a paragraph, as we played different read-
ing games. In addition, we kept on reading and analyzing fiction stories. We continued reading lev-
eled books, explaining new words using synonyms/antonyms, enriching our vocabulary and learning
grammar in context. We continued paying attention to the sequence of events when retelling stories.
We also enforced the First Steps writing genre – writing to instruct. We reviewed words to indicate
sequence, time and order, and students used them in their writing. We continued our focus on de-
veloping simple/compound sentences, and writing conventions: capital letters and basic punctua-
tion.
