Music

First graders continued exploring classroom instruments. After mouth pianos, they
took a closer look into ukuleles, looking at positioning of different sounds on a single
string and working on creating soft and loud sounds. Improving our sense of rhythm,
we also used tambourines, bells, egg shakers, and drums. Following a steady beat
also helped us with singing. We sang Sad King and Little Magic, focusing on and re-
cording the beat. Our song of the month was Pharrell’s Happy, while our composer of
the month was Federic Chopin. Ljudmila Janicijevic

Serbian as a Foreign Language

Students wrapped up the unit about the city by creating a city board game. This
was an opportunity to review the vocabulary as well as to learn some new phrases
such as vrati se (go back), idi do (go to) and preskoči (skip). Although we have al-
ready learned about some clothing items related to winter, we are now expanding

this unit and learning about clothing through short descriptive sentences. The stu- Serbian language Teacher
dents practice reading, writing and understanding; they read description of one’s
clothing and then draw a picture accordingly, and vice versa. They practice oral flu-
ency through describing their own and outfit of their peers.

Movement and Dance

Grade1 students enjoyed working on the PYP unit Amenities. We connected to
this unit through drama. The students created and performed skits about every-
day life – games, neighbors and shopping. Organization was an important part of
our skits; the students were divided into small groups and each group was respon-
sible for choosing a theme and organizing roles within a group. This way the stu-
dent came to a conclusion that communication is an important part of organiza-
tion, and that under some circumstances having a leader is not a bad idea.
