Spanish

Dear first grade parents,

Welcome to our fifth Spanish newsletter! As always, in this letter, you will find out all
the exciting learning activities taking place in the Lower School Spanish class.
As I wrote in our previous Newsletter, the month of February was reserved for
covering our classroom unit. In addition to new vocabulary (school materials/
furniture/ descriptive adjectives), students also learned some of the prepositions Sonja Jecmenica
Spanish Teacher
(debajo de -under, delante de - in front of, al lado de – next to…) in order to be able to
say precisely where the classroom objects are located. By the end of this unit grade
one students showed that they are able to incorporate learned vocabulary in the daily
classroom routines and to follow me in giving the instructions in Spanish (Open your
notebook, Take glue from the box, Put your notebook on the shelf, Take a pencil and
an eraser!).
This week we started with the new Unit – Mi familia (My family). During the last two
classes we learned basic family vocabulary: el abuelo – grandfather, la abuela –
grandmother, la madre – mother, el padre – father, el hermano – brother, la hermana
– sister. The grade one students started to work on this new unit through the different
interactive activities – drawing, flash cards, Tablero, and songs. They learned one song
about a family, and they really enjoyed in singing and acting it out with puppets. In the
next few weeks we will continue to work on our family unit.
