Physical Education

Dear Parents,

During the month of March, First grade students worked on improving their whole body
and foot coordination. We utilized hula-hoops in our activities at first. We practiced spin-
ning the hoop around different body parts, such as our waist, knees and wrists. Alt-

hough it appeared to be a big challenge for some of us, we gave it our best.

By placing hula-hoops on the floor in different patterns, we completed a variety of tasks
while running, jumping and hopping through them. Later on we added more props, such
as balance beams, small benches, hurdles, cones and risers in order to create different
obstacle courses. That is certainly one of the activities that our students enjoyed a lot!

Through these obstacle courses, aside from enhancing the foot and whole body coordina-
tion, students worked on their speed and agility.

Lately, students have been working on improving their throwing and catching skills. We
take part in pair and group activities, as well as in games such as Battleship, Knock-
down, Clean your Backyard, and Dodgeball.

EAL

Grade 1 students began studying the elements of fiction stories. We read stories that
had a problem. We looked at how the character made several attempts to solve the
problem before finally coming up with a solution. Then each student planned out their
own stories on a chart that helped them think about the problem, attempts to solve the

problem, and finally a solution. Then students used the plan to make a rough draft of

their story. After conferencing with the teacher, each student is writing and illustrating a
final draft of their story. We will combine our stories into a book, much like the recipe
book, once everyone has finished. Look for these to come home sometime after the
break!
