Music

Responding to music with movement, grade 1 students used body socks as their main
prop. While exploring a variety of genres they used their previous experience with
body socks in order to create complex choreographies and focus on key element of
each genre, trying to emphasize it with movement. Our song of the month was Phar-
rell’s “Happy,” which students memorized and sang in groups. Further developing
their vocal abilities, students also sang “Step by Step,” “Turn it Off,” and “You Can
Built It.” Lastly, using xylophones, students worked on developing musical accompani- Ljudmila Janicijevic

ment. This time, for a song “Rock My Soul.”

Serbian as a Foreign Language

During April, Grade 1 students learned about the seasons and changes in nature
that happen in spring. We focused on park and playground activities, and we
worked on simple descriptive sentences, comparing adjectives (big and small),
the use of personal pronouns and conjugation.

We continue to review and practice colors, numbers, fruits, vegetables, the
weather, and clothing on a daily basis. Our vocabulary is expanding and we are
focusing more on letters, letter-sound connections and writing.

Movement and Dance

Grade 1 students are working on the PYP unit Minibeasts. Our focus in this unit is
drama. The students are imagining themselves as tiny creatures and creating
short skits inspired by stories Alice in Wonderland and James and the Giant Peach.
We worked on gross motor skills and tried to imitate the movements of various
minibeast (flight forms /wriggling /scurrying /scuttling).

In addition, we continued practicing our body and gross motor skills. Students en-
joyed dancing like robots to the tune of Shimmy Shake. We practiced movement
patterns and each student had the opportunity to create a pattern and use it in
Follow the Leader. Also, we took advantage of nice spring weather and spent time
outdoors playing cooperative games.
