ISB Lower School Specialists’ Newsletter

Spanish

Dear second grade parents,

Welcome to our sixth Spanish newsletter! As always, in this letter you will find out all the
exciting learning activities taking place in the Lower School Spanish class.

During the month of March, the grade two students worked on the connected unit –
Health, which they were exploring also with their classroom teacher. This unit students
Sonja Jecmenica started by brainstorming about healthy food choices. They classified food as healthy or
Spanish Teacher junk food and in so they learned food vocabulary and how to use it in a context (in some

meaningful sentences). In our Spanish classes, we also identified some healthy actions or
those that should be avoided if we want to have a normal/healthy life. For example, stu-
dents learned to say: run in the park, drink two litters of liquids every day, do sports,
watch TV for hours, eat hamburgers every day etc. As for the expressions we learned in
this unit, we practiced to say how often we do or we don’t do something (often, some-
times, never, three times a week…). In this unit the grade two students were focused on
improving their writing, speaking and listening skills.

Recently, we started a new unit that is related to the body. By making connections with
previous units and healthy choices, we plan to learn what can happen to our body if we
eat too much chocolate or we listen to music loudly. We are learning how to say in Span-
ish that some parts of the body hurt us. Students started with the body vocabulary,
which they were practicing through board and memory games, and then they moved on
the use of the verb doler – to hurt. They practiced using the verb doler and body vocabu-
lary in a meaningful sentence, practicing it with their favorite activity – charades. One
student pretends to be injured and others need to guess which part of the body hurts
him/her and what happened to him/her. In the next few weeks grade two students will
continue to work on this unit, working on their Spanish skills.
