Serbian as a Foreign Language

New students learned about fruits and vegetables, practiced reading, writing and
expressing likes and dislikes. The focus of this unit was on negations (ja volim/I like
– ja ne volim /I do not like) and singular and plural (ovo je/this is – ovo su/these
are). We continue to review and practice colors, numbers, the weather, and places
in a city on a daily basis.

Upon completing the unit about the city (places and directions), we started to learn
about people that work in the city. We are creating a booklet of professions. The
goal of this project is to become secure in writing in Cyrillic and to learn to under-
stand the vocabulary from context. So far we learned eight different professions,
and students practiced understanding through playing sentence association game;
the students were guessing the occupation based on sentences that describe one’s
clothing, work place and job-related routines.

of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs). Next we read and analyzed
different world myths, and talked about what all of them had in common. EAL
students focused on paraphrasing skills, and created their own story/myth, fol-
lowing a model we created as a group. In addition, we read the text “An Island of
Giants,” analyzed new vocabulary, and talked about the statues found on Easter
Island.
