In the previous weeks, students were working on the single subject
unit of inquiry ‘Who We Are – Artistic Journeys’ while deepening
their understanding of observational drawing. Students were choos-
ing materials for their inquiries and the use of elements and princi-
ples of art; line, shape, space, and value. Students have started to
learn about the use of value for drawing 3D shapes – shading. Fol-
lowing a pre-assessment task, two artists’ works were introduced:
the drawings and paintings of Leonardo da Vinci and August Rodin.
The aim for this unit is for children to begin to learn about shading.
Also, students will be able to learn that they can use the same ele-
ments of art (line, shape, value, and space) to reach their goals in
different ways.
Since one of the PYP concepts for this Unit of Inquiry is responsibil-
ity and the Learner Profiles are Caring and Principled, students
were grouped into pairs or small groups so they can help each oth-
er during their inquiries.
