Dear Grade 4 parents,
Welcome to our first Spanish Newsletter for this school year! It´s been an enthusiastic start of the year
for Grade 4 students!
We used the initial week to determine our common essential agreements for our Spanish classroom,
as well as to review the basic greetings, farewells and presentation of expressions. We continued the
program with our first connecting unit for this year, Who we are-Heroes and villains. As a means of
introduction, we read about famous heroes from the world´s history taking the opportunity to review
different professions. Then we introduced a cultural content, and the students had the opportunity to
learn more about El Cid, a Spanish national hero who unconditionally fought for his country against
interior and exterior enemies. After watching the movie El Cid la leyenda, we discussed the characteris-
tics of heroes and villains from the legend, amplifying our vocabulary with character adjectives and
reviewing the gender and number of adjectives and nouns. After exploring the legend through different
activities of listening comprehension, the students were asked to choose the main heroes and villains
from the legend and make a detailed description (characteristics, actions and deeds). A wonderful
poster came out as a result of this activity. Furthermore, in order to reinforce the vocabulary learned
st
rd
and to practice grammar contents such as verbs of 1 - 3 person Present Tense and question asking,
as well as to improve students´ writing skills, students have elaborated interviews with their favorite
heroes and were also required to interview other people on their favorite heroes. We are going to close
this unit talking about ourselves as potential heroes, seeing some examples of everyday heroes in real
world (what should we do or how should we be in order to become heroes).
In hope that our next month will be as fruitful as this one.
