Fourth graders began this year as musical heroes. In order to make the most of

this school year we discussed the need to explore our creative potential, use every
opportunity to express our ideas, and take-risks as we go through our musical jour-

ney. In a series of PYP music lessons, students created essential agreements
based on ideas and concepts from music examples encompassing different styles

and genres. In addition, we introduced a brand new percussion instrument to the
family of our percussion instruments - cahon. We were fortunate to have our

"musical hero", our counselor Mr.Jose, help us see the beauty of this instrument by
sharing the basic technique of playing cahon. Our songs of the month were "It's a

Fine Day", "Rather Be", and "Top of the World."

Next month, our musical heroes are becoming composers. Working in small
groups, students will utilize their knowledge of reading and writing notes in order to

come up with authentic tunes.
