In the previous weeks, we have been getting to know each other while drawing, painting
with watercolors, and making collages. We have been working on the unit of inquiry ‘Who
We Are – Together’, as a connection to the students’ learning in the homeroom. The focus
in this unit is to expose children to various activities in which they can build their relation-
ships, begin to learn to work together, and learn about the use of materials.
We started the school year with pre-assessment tasks for the use of pastel pencils, pas-
tels, watercolors, collage materials and work in groups. Students worked on their individu-
al projects in free inquiry over several classes, after which the children were grouped into
two groups, by skill level. While new knowledge and skill was introduced to one group,
another group reviewed their knowledge from the previous period with Ms. Jelena. Stu-
dents sometimes chose to work on their individual pieces and sometimes with their class-
mates while exploring materials in exploration stations. The children reflect on their work
during every period if they choose to do so. You may find students’ reflections in the form
of a title or a short sentence on the back of their works.
We often start our classes by reading a book, which the children enjoy tremendously.
