Dear Parents,
Third graders spent the month of October working on Basketball unit. For
some of our students this was first contact with this sport, so we worked on
developing the very basic skills.
We practiced dribbling the ball along the court, changing direction and stop-
ping on signal. Since basketball is a team sport and we know how much it is
important to play as a team, students were developing their passing technique,
as well. We have practiced chest and shoulder passes on shorter distances,
and the overhead pass for longer distance. Shooting the ball into the hoop
was the biggest challenge for us, but we were successful in scoring many
times.
After discussing the basic concept of the game, the basic rules and regula-
tions, such as what is a “travelling” or a “double dribble,” students played
games. They had a chance to watch their friends playing and to analyze the
game, which helped them to understand rules and regulations better and to
apply them during their game. By the end of the unit students were able to
play the game successfully, emphasizing the importance of team work and
cooperation.
Now we are moving forward to our Soccer unit and are very exiting about new
skills that we will be working on.
