Dear Parents,

In November, our students spent most of their P.E. time using the climbing wall. Some

simple activities helped us to reduce any initial anxiety and increase self-confidence. Lat-

er, we moved on to different activities as individuals, pairs or groups.

Grade three, four and five students worked on similar activities to develop their skills, in-
creasing the level of difficulty according to age and ability.

We timed each other to see how fast we could climb across the whole wall. We played a

variety of games on the wall such as “The luck of the draw,” (A game where we try to

quickly find the same number on the grip piece that a partner pulled from a box); “Get
dressed” (where students have to put on a glove, a hat, a jacket etc. while climbing

across the wall); “Dodge the Frisbee” (where a climber has to climb across the whole wall

while a group of other players gently throw sponge Frisbees at him/her. Wherever the
Frisbee touches the climber, he/she is not allowed to use that body part until the end of

the game.) Some of our students dared to try “Blind Climbing” – going across the wall

while blindfolded. This game is great for building students’ awareness and sense of touch.

One of the most challenging games was “Dwindling Resources,” where students climb in a
row but are not allowed to use the holders touched by the climber before them.

Through all these activities, students improved their self-confidence, worked on fair-play,

positive sporting behavior and trust, as well as developing communication and coopera-

tion.

Many times throughout the unit, students took positive risks and used good judgment on
the climbing wall while working on their body coordination and strength.
