January was an action-packed month in Music class. Students returned from the

winter break recharged and ready to learn. We recognized Mozart’s birthday through
various activities. Highlights from the famous Milosh Forman’s movie “Amadeus”

were watched, revealing many new interesting facts about the master composer.
Students were also interested in the BBC’s animated version of the “Magic Flute.”

Those activities provided inspiring discussion and helped them learn about opera.
Students showed keen interest and appreciation for Mozart’s work.

In addition to music theory, singing skills were mastered. This month it was done
through challenging songs such as “Season of love,” “We Go Together.”

Grade 2 students played ukuleles. Focus was on proper use of the instrument. They
began creating simple chords, such as C-major and A-minor.

Songs of the month came from “Magic flute” and “Queen of the Night.” Those were
“Papageno,” “Requiem,” and “Turkish Rondo.”

Students enjoy various music styles and genres; we therefore opened the New Year
with greatest hits from Brodway beats, country tunes and gospel songs.

Next month we will further develop our Ukulele Band’s repertoire with more special
tunes, from “Yellow Submarine” to “Smoke on the Water.” I am sure we will enjoy.

It seems worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh
new start, also brought a beautiful didactic book to our school library (available

soon), “Man with the Violin.” This book about the world famous violinist Joshua Bell
teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can easily experience,

only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also highlights how perceptive children
are, much more than the adults.

One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian
artist Dusan Petricic. The book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just

like our school does.
