Grade three students were working on the single subject unit of inquiry ‘How
the World Works – Elements and Principles’ as a connection to their learning
in the homeroom. The goal for this unit is for children to go through design
process while responding to the works by famous artists and creating usable
objects.
In the beginning of the unit, students were observing the works by Antonio
Gaudi, Hundertwasser, Santiago Calatrava, Piet Mondrian, and Jovan Bijelic.
Also, we went to see two exhibitions which we used as provocations for this
unit. Students went through a ‘See, think, and wonder’ procedure at the Na-
tional Museum while watching the works by Piet Mondrian and artists who
responded to Mondrian’s works, and at the Gallery SANU while viewing Jovan
Bijelic’s works.
Students set their individual goals; some of them planned to design and cre-
ate pencil boxes, jewelry boxes, stained glass projects, book covers, book-
marks, and other items that they will be able to use at home. I look forward to
see how students will go through design process while creating their projects.
