Students returned from the winter break recharged and ready to learn. They recognized Mozart’s birthday
through various activities during the month. Students were especially interested in BBC’s animated version of
the “Magic Flute,” which also led them to stimulating discussions and learning about opera. Students showed
keen interest and appreciation for Mozart’s work.
Broadway Beats: “Season of Love” and “We Go Together,” were not only fun to sing, but also valuable music
theory materials. Students were quite successful in reading music scores and reviewing symbols for dynamics,
tempo, length of notes.
Students also showed good understanding of music signs such as coda, corona, repetition. They sang in two
parts, especially highlighting length of notes in different parts.
New arrangements for new tunes were built. Fingering technique was further mastered. Students especially
loved developing this skill through beautiful Japanese song “Furusato.” They practiced playing B, A, G, E and D
sounds on recorders, as well as C-major and A- minor in “Alabama Gal” on ukuleles.
Obviously, January was an action-packed month in Music class. Next month we will continue to refine our in-
strumental numbers and enrich the structure of our arrangements. We will also learn more about Mozart and his
most popular tunes.
It seems worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also brought a
beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin.” This book about the world
famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can easily experience,
only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also highlights how perceptive children are, much more than the
adults.
One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian artist Dusan Petricic. The
book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just like our school does.
