January was an action-packed month in Music class. Students returned from the winter break recharged and
ready to learn. We recognized Mozart’s birthday, with special interest shown in BBC’s animated version of the
“Magic Flute.” That led us to passionate discussions while learning about opera. Students showed keen inter-
est and appreciation for Mozart’s work. They successfully analyzed different stages of Mozart’s life through
Milosh Forman’s movie “Amadeus.” That was also an inspiring opportunity to re-read music scores and review
symbols for dynamics, tempo, length and rests.
After introducing chords C-major, A -minor and melodic pattern for “Smoke on the Water,” we made a unique
band with wind, percussion and string families involved. While playing the Japanese tune “Furusato,” based on
BAG, we refreshed our fingering and breathing technique on playing recorders.
Our guest musician, famous percussionist Papa Nick, motivated us to further continue discovering our passion
while playing classroom instruments.
We played the famous tune “Smoke on the water” split into groups. Some of our goals for February are to
continue refining our music composition and using
musical scores to understand the way a musical story is told through the use of notation.
It seems worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also brought a
beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin.” This book about the world
famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can easily experi-
ence, only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also highlights how perceptive children are, much more
than the adults.
One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian artist Dusan Petricic. The
book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just like our school does.
