Dear Grade 4 parents,
Welcome to the new Spanish Newsletter.
Grade 4 students worked on their How the World Works: Our Changing Earth unit that inspired
us to focus on how language is used to explain the causes and consequences of different natu-
ral phenomena. The students developed their reading comprehension skills by reading about
terremotos (earthquakes), maremotos (tsunamis), tornados, inundaciones (floods) and volca-
noes. We especially focused on language expressions that serve to recommend and advise on
how people should behave in case some of these natural phenomena occur (Es importante/
necesario/recommendable/aconsejable/hay que/tiene que/debe +infinitive form of the verb). We
watched short movies Prevenir es vivir, Qué hacer en caso de un cismo/maremoto, Cruz Roja
presenta-tornados/errupciones volcánicas/inundaciones and carried out a series of comprehen-
sion activities. Furthermore, the students acquired the vocabulary related to the items in first aid
kit (las vendas, la gasa, el esparadrapo, el tiritas, el alcohol, los medicamentos, el suero oral,
las tijeras, las pinzas) as well as the names of other things necessary to have in emergency
situations (la linterna, la comida enlatada, los fósforos, las mantas, la ropa caliente) We went
through our first aid kit and discussed which items there are/there are not. In groups, the stu-
dents are writing recommendations on what people should do before (antes), during (durante)
and after (después) these disasters.
The students for whom this is the first year of learning Spanish were learning about different
weather expressions, seasons, days of the week, months of the year and telling time.
Looking forward to our next month of Spanish.
