Grade five students continued working on the single subject unit of
inquiry ‘How The World Works – Elements and Principles’ while re-
sponding to the works of famous sculptors. Students were deepening
their understanding of the difference between the representational
and abstract shapes through creating sculptures.
The goal for this unit is for students to continue learning about the
use of elements and principles of art and design to deepen their un-
derstanding of themselves and the world around them. Children were
given multiple choices regarding the works of famous artists and ma-
terials. They set their individual goals through a ‘See, think, and won-
der’ procedure while viewing the works of famous sculptors. Some
students created representational sculptures and others created ab-
stract ones.
