Dear Grade 5 parents,

With Grade 5 we had a great start of the new semester in Spanish!

The students are working on their connecting unit How We Express Ourselves: Beliefs and val-
ues. In Spanish, we decided to initiate this theme by making a cultural connection and talk

about a polemic phenomenon rooted in the Spanish culture and society, bullfighting. In order to
introduce this phenomenon, we watched the famous cartoon El toro Ferdinando about the bull

who didn´t want to be a part of the bullfighting event. We read different texts and watched vide-

os to explain what the event consists of and carried out a series of comprehension activities.
The students learned the vocabulary related to la corrida de toros (el torero, el toro, la plaza de
toros, el arenero, el picador, la banderilla, el banderillero, la muleta, el estoque, etc.) doing

online activities and playing web games such as quizzlet, speller, scatter and race. Also, in

pairs, students explained the words to each other and guessed the words.

Moreover, for the students to be able to express their opinion on this phenomenon, we intro-

duced the opinion expressions and verbs (pienso que, opino que, desde mi punto de vista, en
mi opinion, me parece que, estoy a favor de/en contra de) as well as the expressions for agree-

ment and disagreement (estoy de acuerdo/estoy en desacuerdo). Currently the students are
learning how to write a good argumentative text whilst creating anti-bullfighting campaign. We

will proceed learning how to use the aforementioned expressions in debates about other sub-
jects of potential animal abuse such as the animals in zoos and whale hunting.

The group who started taking Spanish this year is learning how to express their opinion in a
simpler way, using structures such as Me gusta(n)/No me gusta(n), Te queda bien/mal/ancho/

estrecho, etc. whilst talking about fashion outfits. Consequently, they acquired a range of vocab-
ulary of clothes, physical description of people and the attributes describing the clothes, as well

as shopping expressions (¿En qué puedo ayudarle? ¿Qué talla quiere? ¿Dónde están los
probadores? ¿Cuánto cuesta?). They are currently practicing for a role-play that includes a dia-

logue in a shop made by themselves.

I hope that our next months will be as productive as this one.
