January was a fully action-packed month in Music class. Students recognized Mozart’s birthday, with special
interest shown in BBC’s animated version of the “Magic Flute.” It led to several discussions, while learning
about opera. Keen interest and appreciation for Mozart’s work was shown. Students were especially success-
ful in analyzing different stages of Mozart’s life, through Milosh Forman’s movie “Amadeus,” which was also an
inspiring opportunity to read music scores and review signs for dynamics, tempo, length and rests.
This month, students were also focused on ukuleles, recorders and part singing. They mastered their skills of
reading different music scores. What they also learned and were thrilled about, were the ways of writing tubs
for guitar and ukulele.
Last, but not the least, Grade 5 students explored a very special instrument – their voice.
Through a series of acapella singing exercises, students realized they can sing different length of notes at the
same time and create harmonies. They liked it very much! January also brought two-part singing, with songs
“You Gotta Be Brave,” “Season of Love,” “LOL,” “Yonder Come Day,” as well as ukulele tunes with “Don't
Worry Be Happy,” “Smoke on the Water,” “Jingle Bells.”
Our former unit has lead us gradually to the most exciting unit, which is just about to begin – Exhibition - How
Do We Express Ourselves .
It seems worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also brought a
beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin.” This book about the world
famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can easily experi-
ence, just by paying attention a bit more closely. The book also highlights how perceptive children are, much
more than the adults. One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian
artist Dusan Petricic. The book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just like our school does.
