After the holiday and great winter concert experience, we were in excellent shape again for performing,
exploring and discovering music some more.

In the beginning, we were led by wonderful Tchaikovsky and his famous “Nutcracker,” after which an-

other famous composer was introduced, Mozart. His “Magic Flute” helped us enrich understanding of
our current unit “Senses.” Mozart’s birthday was recognized on January 27; the same day we celebrat-
ed one of the most beloved Serbian reformer, writer, church leader, Saint Sava. It was a day of won-
derful joy, music and dance.

It is worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also brought a
beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin”. This book about the
world famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can
easily experience, only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also highlights how perceptive children
are, much more than the adults.

One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated by Serbian artist Dusan
Petricic. The book exemplifies another successful international cooperation, just back to Mozart again –
we watched a new documentary that revealed many new interesting details about the master compos-

er. Students were especially interested in the BBC’s animated version of the “Magic Flute,” which
helped them learn about the opera, inspiring them at the same time to open lots of music-related dis-
cussions. Students showed keen interest and appreciation for Mozart’s work. An especially sweet mo-
ment was brought by Philipos, who shared Mozart chocolate with his friends. We agreed that all our
senses enjoyed: we abundantly enjoyed feeling, hearing, seeing, smelling and touching Mozart’s world.
Plus, one has to admit: that was by far the yummiest class ever!

What students also liked in January was discussing the sounds used in the story, such as bells in
“Papageno” journey or “Magic Flute” tunes through the story. Reading and writing notes and music
symbols were continued, through various music charts we used – playing with sticks, tambourines, and
drums.

The instrument of the month was the ukulele. All students played the instrument properly, in time with a
beat. They enjoyed strumming together.

Songs of the month were “Music Family – Hi Ho Hi Ho, They All Loved Music So," “Alabama Gal,” and
“LOL” (“Laugh Out Loud”).

Next month we will strengthen our listening and memorizing skills by playing various games with Mo-
zart’s music, from “Small Night Music,” “Papageno,” “Queen of the Night air."
With such a great work and fun class atmosphere while covering units based on exploring senses, I
believe I could conclude quite precisely: sense of the month was - sense of humor.
