Music class had a truly action-packed January. Students returned from the winter break recharged and eager to
learn. They recognized Mozart’s birthday through various activities. BBC’s animated version of the
“Magic Flute” by Mozart seems to have been especially interesting, as it brought many discussions
among students. It also helped them learn more about opera. Keen interest and appreciation for Mo-
zart’s work was shown.
In January students also learned to distinguish sounds of different instruments in “Magic Flute” – bells
from “Papageno” and use of flute during the story. They described how music (story) made them feel
and expressed their opinions about the stories they heard.

Sounds as a mean of expressing imagination were explored. All students participated in performing and
creating music, both individually and collectively, while playing ukulele.

After focusing on tone color and sounds types, names of the instruments were introduced and re-
freshed, such as banjo, cello, trombone etc. Students sang a new tune "Hi Ho – they all loved music
so."

Next month we expect to have even more fun by creating our own sounds and amusing effects to the
favorite stories. We also plan to read and write music symbols, so that we could keep on creating more
exciting music stories.

It worth emphasizing how the New Year, besides enthusiasm and a fresh new start, also brought a
beautiful didactic book to our school library (available soon), “Man with the Violin.” This book about the
world famous violinist Joshua Bell teaches us how much beauty of music and life in general we can
easily experience, only if we pay attention a bit more. The book also highlights how perceptive children
are, much more than the adults. One more detail makes us proud regarding this book – it was illustrated
by Serbian artist Dusan Petricic. The book exemplifies successful international cooperation, just like our
school does.
