Grade two students continued to work on the single subject unit
of inquiry ‘How the World Works – Elements and Principles’ as
a connection to their learning in the homeroom.
Students were presented with the dilemma of how to represent
a boat inside the space of the water. Knowing that it has seats
on top of it, we conducted an experiment in order to find out
how to best represent it. We used paper boats, sunk them into
water and observed where the end of our improvised ‘Sea’ was.
It was much easier for children to understand the use of color
for overlapping; this kept us thinking for a long time, and it was
a difficult but worthwhile question! Through understanding how
to represent real space, students were illuminating the transdis-
ciplinary theme – How the World Works. Overall, this was an
exciting and successful beginning of student learning about rep-
resenting reality. Good job, great two!
Also, we had successful conferences where children were able
to show their works and demonstrate their knowledge.
