Second grade students continued exploring ukulele and playing in a band.
They worked on fingering, but also memorized names and positions of dif-
ferent pitches and frets. Students improved their fingering technique, while
exploring a number of melodic patterns on two different strings. In addition
to ukulele, they used percussion instruments too, making accompaniment
to many tunes and utilizing a variety of rhythmic patterns.
The inspiring story of Evelyn Glennie’s life – who is a deaf percussionist
player – motivated students to pay more attention to all their senses. The
importance of using of all senses in order to stay in balance and work in
team was discussed.
Songs of the month were “Smoke on the Water”, “Stand by Me” and “Day-
O.”
Musicians of the month were Harry Belafonte and Evelyn Glennie.
Next month we will continue creating arrangements for singing tunes and
analyzing variety of interpretations of the famous tunes, such as “Stand by
Me”– from Muppets to “For Change” edition, John Lennon, including also
the original one, with Ben E. King. Next step will be creating our authentic
version, using string, wind and percussion instruments. Let us however not
forget the most beautiful section – our voices!
