Kindergarten students have started working on the single subject unit
of inquiry ‘How the World Works – Elements and Principles’ while dis-
covering new art forms and the use of movement.
In this unit, we are focusing on the use of form, line, and color. For in-
troducing movement as a new principle of art, students watched a
movie about Vincent Van Gogh. Students first went through free in-
quiry over several classes in order to find out how to represent move-
ment through the use of lines. Then children reflected on their findings
so they were able to go further. Students were working on their individ-
ual projects and in groups. We had conversations about how we work
in teams so children practiced asking each other questions in order to
agree on what they will create together.
Also, we had successful conferences where children were able to
show their works and demonstrate their knowledge.
