Kindergartners were involved in many literacy building activities in this peri-

od. After reading aloud a number of books, we talked about them, and
identified characters, plots and settings by saying who was in the story,

where it took place and telling what happened. We also talked about the
beginning, middle and end parts of the stories. Corduroy, the cute teddy

bear who left his shelf in search of a button and finally found a home and
A Pocket for Corduroy drew a lot of interest and heartfelt responses from

the children. The children’s responses to The Little Red Hen varied from
support to critiquing her for not sharing her loaf of bread with the other

characters. On reflection, however, they agreed that the other animals did
not really deserve anything because they had not helped her when she re-

ally needed them. Other activities included coming up with rhyming words
as an introduction to word families and using sequencing cards to tell sto-

ries. The children read levelled books at home and shared their responses
to the books with the teacher. During the Simple Machines unit, we fo-

cused on the language of the unit.
