Dear Parents,
The beginning of school year was very busy for students new to English. We explored, practiced and
enjoyed learning new words and phrases related to introductions, greetings and making friends. We
became familiar with terms we use to describe a classroom, school and playground. We focused on
simple sentences and providing short yes/no answers. We demonstrated basic action verbs using
different TPR activities, pictures, and stories. We also focused on listening skills, as we started listen-
ing leveled repetitive books. The students also practiced responding to Wh-questions based on the
text (who, what, when, where) using present tense. In-class support also included inquiry into trans-
disciplinary theme: How We Express Ourselves, and the central idea: Signs and symbols are used to
communicate a message. EAL students created their own signs, paying attention to the given criteria
(picture, shape, line, color). We reviewed the colors, talked about the types of lines (straight, squig-
gle), basic shapes (square, circle, rectangle, diamond), and focused on words “communicate”, and
“message”. The students were actively engaged and showed enthusiasm to learn English.
