Dear Parents,
Grade 3 students continued to work on developing their writing skills. We read both fic-
tion and non-fiction texts to which the students responded in writing. Scaffolding was
provided in the form of guiding questions. The students retold the main events of fic-
tional stories and the main ideas of non-fictional texts and provided supporting details
and information. We read stories aloud to gauge the students’ reading fluency and then
discussed the texts. We identified the author’s purpose, looked for descriptive words
and made charts of the adjectives we had identified in the texts and the words they were
describing. In other stories we identified the structure of the text and wrote down words
and phrases that showed or indicated cause and effect. We played a number of language
games, the most recent favorite being Just-a- Minute where a child has to describe cer-
tain categories of words as precisely as possible for the others to guess. This fun-filled
game has the children thinking quickly and shouting out words in excitement.
