Music

MS. LJUDMILA JANICIJEVIC

Dear Parents,
After our great winter concert experience and winter holiday, students got back to January classes in
an excellent mood for further exploring and performing music.

In the beginning, they were led by wonderful Tchaikovsky and his famous “Nutcracker,” ,after which
another famous composer was introduced, Mozart. His “Magic Flute” helped them enrich under-
standing of school’s current unit “Senses.” Mozart’s birthday was recognized on January 27. The same
day we celebrated one of the most beloved Serbian reformers, who was also a writer, church leader,
educator and diplomat – Saint Sava. It was a day of wonderful joy, music and dance.
Back to Mozart, again – we watched a new documentary that revealed many new interesting details
about the master composer. Students were especially interested in BBC’s animated version of the
“Magic Flute,” which helped them learn about the opera, inspiring them at the same time to open lots
of music-related discussions.
The biggest gift in our journey, as well a wonderful surprise, was Ms. Ishi, our KG teacher, who
shared her expertise and played the beautiful Mozart’s “Andante” on her professional flute. We were
so excited and proud to hear and see Ms. Ishi’s music score and her great interpretation.
Students showed keen interest and appreciation for Mozart’s work. They watched the a great report
from Salzburg, which helped them better understand secrets of the Mozart Kugel’ success, with its
different colors and packages. The class agreed: all our senses enjoyed! We abundantly loved feeling,
hearing, and seeing, smelling and touching Mozart’s world. Plus, one has to admit; that was by far the
yummiest class ever!
What students also liked in January was discussing the sounds used in the story, such as bells in
“Papageno” journey or “Magic Flute” tunes through the story.
In addition, reading and writing notes and music symbols were continued, through the various music
charts we used, playing with different wind instruments.
Instruments of the month were mouth pianos and recorders. All students played the instruments
properly and in time with a beat. They enjoyed playing together.
Next month we are planning to further strengthen our listening and memorizing skills, by playing var-
ious games with Mozart’s music, such as “Small Night Music,” “Papageno,” “Queen of the Night Air"
etc.
With such great work and a fun class atmosphere, I believe I could conclude quite precisely; sense of
the month was – sense of humor.
